Life without a desktop?

So, I'm trying to figure out what to do about my dead Xbox. Well, not about the dead Xbox, but about not having a PVD. The problem is I don't have the hardware laying around to build a PVD/PVR/DVR. Unless I use something I already have - like my desktop.

It's more than powerful enough to be a PVR and I'm starting to think that it's not worth keeping it up-to-date (hardware-wise) anymore. What is its current purpose? Managing my bank account, mostly. I do most of my work on my laptop upstairs on the couch anymore. It's basically just a thing that sits in a spot where I can balance my checkbook. Beside Tiff's computer. I'm not sure that it's really worth it to maintain an entire computer just for that purpose.

What do others think? Has anyone gone the route of getting rid of the desktop? I imagine my life from now on will probably be laptop-based - it's just much more convenient. Even Tiff likes using her laptop much more than being bound to a desktop.
